FAQ

Some commonly asked questions

It’s a legal requirement to renew your card every ten years or three year if over 70, and there are quite a few reasons to make sure you have a valid licence:

  • It’s illegal to drive without a valid licence
  • You can be fined up to £1,000 if you’re stopped by police
  • You may face difficulties with car insurance if you are driving with an expired licence
  • You may be breaking local laws when driving abroad
  • Car hire firms may deem your licence to be invalid

It’s important that licences are updated every 10 years or every 3 years if over 70.

Though the photocard needs to be renewed every 10 years, in general, driving licences are valid until you're 70, after which it needs renewing every three years. If you only need to update your address or name, or you're over 70 and you're just renewing it, this is free.
Unfortunately at this time we cannot process any applications for customers who reside in Northern Ireland.

You can replace your current British driving licence online if you:

  • Have lost your British licence (full or provisional) or it has been stolen, defaced or destroyed
  • Can meet the minimum eyesight requirement
  • Are currently not prevented from driving for any reason
  • Have a valid UK passport or another form of identity
  • Can provide addresses of where you have lived over the last three years
When changing your name or address, you will need to provide original documents confirming your identity and provide a passport style photograph as well as your original paper driving licence.
